Domestic Hefeweizens
Ok ok so I still think Aaron's questions in the previous posting warrant some serious discussion (anyone gonna stick up for my Darth Vader of beers, Heineken Light??), but I also have a (relatively speaking) important question that's been rolled around for a while - anyone know a decent domestic (American) hefeweizen? Not for lack of not trying (I think between Colin and me, we've probably sampled upwards of twenty different ones), but I've never found one that really impresses me. I just had the Pyramid Brewery Hefeweizen from Whole Foods and it was pretty good, but.. eh, overall boring. A nice enough clean summer drink, but nothing to write home about. I think my fave widely available bottled one so far is prob the Shiner Hefeweizen out of Texas, because it's good and yeasty and cuts nicely with an orange, but... there's got to be more than this in our great United States, yes? Maybe something on draft somewhere?

To be frank, i dont think americans get what a hefeweizen is. Most of the ones in the good ole US that i've had tasted more like the brewer was trying to cram as much citrus into a wheat beer as possible. And it turns out to have the complete opposite effect as a good german one. German ones are crisp and refreshing for hot weather. Americans smack of intense taste on the first sip, but then half way through the bottle you realize the taste is just grating, no subtly to it. They too heavy. If there's a good one out there I'd like to try it.
